25% Aqueous Shellac Solution
IT’S NOT YOUR GRANDFATHER’S SHELLAC!
Two concerns are generally raised when using shellac in delivery system
applications:
1) Use of organic solvents
2) Questionable release consistency.
Marcoat addresses both concerns. Marcoat is formulated as a 25% aqueous
solution. Past inconsistent release characteristics were most commonly caused by
esterification of the film’s functional groups caused by residual organic solvents
left in the film and/or using raw shellac purified by sodium hypochlorite (bleach). The
shellac used to prepare Marcoat is NOT bleached.
The film that results from using Marcoat:
- Has very low moisture vapor and oxygen transmission
- Can improve stability
- Reduces odor and taste permeation
